In our last article, Line Types Used In Ultralight Fishing, I explained to you the differences in the 4 main types of line used in ultralight fishing. For this post, I am going to describe the different aspects of ultralight braided fishing line, and how you can better utilize it the next time you go out!

In my humble opinion, ultralight braided fishing line is the best choice overall, from the available options in fishing lines. From monofilament, fluorocarbon, and co-polymer, braided fishing line gives the highest strength with the smallest diameter of all 4 types. The way ultralight braided fishing line works, is the manufacturer takes 3 or 4 strands of superfine nylon thread. They begin wrapping these strands together to form a braid pattern. This interlocking of finer, smaller threads, combined together provides an extremely strong ultralight braided fishing line.

Because the manufacturer takes smaller threads, binding them together, this also provides incredible stiffness, while still being limp on the reel. You can feel the difference in a clear monofilament or nylon fishing line, when comparing it to ultralight braided fishing line. The monofilament has a limpness to it, that almost makes you feel like it is going to snap. The braid has a “solid” feel to it. The limpness while on the spool helps to keep coils from jumping off of the reel while you are casting. This is a typical issue associated with ultralight braided fishing line. As long as you stick with a quality brand, you will get what you pay for. I prefer Power Pro 10/2 in Moss Green.

The wound together properties, zero stretch, and incredible stiffness makes ultralight braided fishing line super sensitive. You will feel every single “tick”, piece of wood, weed top, and rock pile on the bottom. After some time, and experience, you will learn to tell the difference between types of cover on the bottom, and actual fish bites. I believe I end up catching more fishing using braid than any other type.

So there you have it. You know you should be using ultralight braided fishing line. Why aren’t you? If you are still using monofilament, or flurocarbon, you should definately give braid a legitimate shot, I guarantee it will help you land more fish. Just remember to keep your drag set so you don’t snap your rod tip! Until next time!

The next time that you go to the pond for a fishing expedition, make sure that you don't forget your ultralight gear. When it comes to pond fishing, nothing beats it. The smaller line diameter, and lure sizes pose less of a threat to the fish, making them more eager to bite! These smaller fish are almost what I consider "dumb" and will bite just about anything. Larger fish have learned, normally from people using larger baits.

There are also some decent sized fish in these ponds. One of my biggest fish, a 7lb 14oz monster caught in the spring, was out of a residential retention pond. I caught her while spawning on ultralight fishing gear, using a 6" plastic worm. Twitching it across her bed, she finally took it to move it away, and I set the hook. Not the biggest fish that I have ever caught, but the biggest one on this small of gear, that is for sure!

You don't necessarily catch the biggest fish in the pond using ultralight fishing gear, but you do catch a lot of them. Pretty much, you are guaranteed a great time on the water. As long as you are going after more fish, and not worried about the size of the fish, you will have fun. Isn't it about being out on the water anyways?

Not to mention, is the cost of ultralight fishing. You can get a tackle box, some lures, and a rod and reel combo for less than $50 total. That is the cost of one of my full sized rods! There are a lot more effective ways to catch more fish, than spending $500 on what the professionals say you need. Remember, they get paid to say that!

If you are itching to get out and sling a few lures, you can rest assured knowing that you are only going to need a few small items, and they are going to be easily carried with you wherever you decide to head off fishing. Your ultralight combo, tackle box, and a few select lures are the only ultralight fishing gear you need to get out and have a great day on the water. We all know that ultralight fishing helps you catch more fish, big fish too, but who ever knew that it really was this easy to get on the water?

Picking up a quality ultralight fishing combo is key though, as you want to generally stay away from the models ranging in the $15 to $30 range. Not that all of the models in this price range are junk, just that it is the way they normally go. Only new manufacturers that are producing quality start out in this price bracket, and they often see how they compare and quickly raise their prices. The price difference isn’t a whole lot, and considering that the rod and reel combo are going to be around for a while, you can easily see why investing the extra $20 or $30 this year will save you a few bucks over the next few years.

A small ultralight fishing tackle box is all that you need, and if you look through the posts, you’ll see exactly the type of tackle box that I carry with me while I am bouncing from pond to pond. The box easily fits into my back pocket, and carries the essential lures for ripping lips on golf courses, retention ponds, and even backwater cuts that haven’t seen people in years. These two pieces of equipment, your patience, and a few chosen lures are all you need to unloaded the pond of her bounty. Just make sure to let ‘em go after you catch ‘em!
