If you are thinking about taking a fishing trip with your family, or a few mates from your office, you may want to think about Alaska fishing and lodging. The Alaskan wilderness offers vast amounts of natural beauty, as well as excellent trophy fishing. You are going to have to plan your trip accordingly though, because many lodges close during the winter season, as the arctic storms can force people to stay a lot longer than they had bargained for. The costs involved with these fishing trips isn't too expensive usually, so as long as you plan accordingly, and even get a few buddies to throw down with you, you can have a much better fishing trip to Alaska.

There are a few different places that you can travel to in Alaska, ranging from some fly fishing on the famous Kenai river, to hitting up mountain streams for steelhead, and even getting down into the depths for doormat sized halibut. All of these fish put up a huge fight, and with the natural backdrop in Alaska, you are guaranteed to have a great time on your fishing trip. Before you leave though, you are going to want to make sure that you plan accordingly.

When it comes to planning your trip, you are going to have to figure a few things out. First, you are going to have to determine which lodge you are going to want to stay at, and then you are going to have to figure out which type of fish you are wanting to catch. If you don't have a particular species in mind, there are a wide variety of charters available for you, with most being tied directly into the lodge that you'll be staying at.

Choosing the right time to go to Alaska, throughout the year, will help you get the most from your fishing trip. Sometimes, during the winter, storms will blow in that can make walking around outside incredibly miserable, let alone trying to catch any fish. Because of this, you are going to want to make sure that you order your trip during the winter, but schedule it for the summer. This will help you save the most on Alaska fishing and lodging for your next trip. Most lodges have full amenities available, so whichever lodge you choose, within budget, will usually be a great place to visit.

The pristine surroundings, the untouched rivers and lakes, turns a fishing trip into an adventure. Whatever your skill level is, fishing in Alaska is sure to meet your greatest expectations. Alaska provides the fisherman with more than 627 species of fish. The state has three million lakes, 3,000 rivers, two oceans, (Arctic and Pacific), Seas, (Bering, Chukchi, Alaska) and the Gulf of Alaska. With the many different areas and waters to fish, the question is not will you be able to catch anything, but how many fish will I catch!

Alaska has five fishing regions. South-central Alaska is known for its halibut from Kachemak Bay, the King Salmon from the Kenai River and beautiful Rainbow Trout. The Southeast region is a rustic area with majestic glaciers, fjords, and untouched forests and lakes. The rivers and lakes are filled with many species of fish both marine and freshwater. The Southwest region has excellent sport fisheries, and is known for its Pacific Salmon and Rainbow Trout. The Interior Region with its remote waters and wilderness has many areas to find Northern Pike, Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, and Arctic Char. Lastly, in the Far North Region you will find Sheefish, Northern Pike, and Salmon, just to name a few.

If you have an interest in crabbing, try it in the calm waters of Thorne Bay, away from the turbulent ocean waters. Take a guided charter or a “crab” cruise to experience crab fishing from the professionals. Learn about setting pots, using bait and the best part, harvesting and eating the crab.

Whether you are a fly fisherman, or interested in deep-sea fishing, Alaska has all of these areas of interest available. For your adventure to be more enjoyable, look into obtaining a guide, someone who really knows the area and can take you to the best areas based on the type of fish you wish to catch. Fishing in Alaska also gives you the opportunity to be a part of the landscape. It is common to see Moose, Caribou and other wildlife as you are fishing! Take an Ocean Charter and see whales, sea lions, and sea otters.

To make your trip enjoyable, Alaska has several lodging options available. You can book rooms at plush resorts, or make a reservation at a rustic camp along a secluded river with nominal amenities. Many fishing camps offer very comfortable accommodations for its guests, complete with restaurants, cellular phone services, and satellite hook ups. It is your choice, totally escape your world, or indulge in comfort. Many of the lodging options offer fly-in services via small plane or helicopter, to reach those remote areas.

With this information, either the novice or expert fisherman can begin to plan their vacation to the wilds of Alaska. Picture the majestic Glaciers, the untouched lakes, the clean air and the exhilaration of catching that record-breaking salmon. This would entice anyone to begin his or her Alaskan Fishing journey.

The city of Homer has the best fishing in Alaska bar none. The average halibut caught in Homer ranges from fifty-five to eighty pounds, it’s nothing for a few one-hundred plus pound halibut to show up at the docks in the afternoon. But do not be surprised if you hook a three hundred pound flat fish on your fishing trip, because these big bruisers are out there and are very cunning.

Halibut fishing in Alaska is always done with a chartered boat and professional guide. You will need someone well versed in catching these monsters of the sea, because after wearing you out with the rod and reel, you still need to get the fish onto the boat and halibut usually needs two people for this maneuver. At times they need to be shot with a pistol so it’s easier to pull them over the side of the boat.

Choosing an Alaskan halibut fishing trip is not very hard, especially with the Internet. Just do a search on your favorite search engine for “halibut fishing charter in Alaska” and start checking out the services one by one until you find one you like. As always, ask the typical questions of cost, what you need to supply for your day on the boat, and of course how much will it cost to clean, filet and have shipped back home.

Fishing lodges and hotels are abundant and when you contact the fishing charter, ask them where the best place to stay while fishing halibut in Alaska. They will know which places are the best and will keep you from being disappointed once you get there.

There are two reasons to go fishing for halibut in Alaska. The first is the great time you will have dragging one of the huge fish to the surface and getting him on board and the second is the absolutely wonderful halibut grilled steaks you will enjoy once you are back home and get your grill fired up. If you have never tasted grilled halibut, then run down to your local fish monger and buy a couple of one pound filets and try it. Then you will know what all the fuss over halibut is.

Salmon and halibut fishing in Alaska are both equally rewarding for the sport and the taste of the fish, and since you’re going to be traveling that far for vacation. You might as well book a fishing lodge on the Kenai or Copper River and enjoy catching some salmon as well.

Anglers all over the world know that Alaska fishing trips cannot be beat. The beautiful landscape of Alaska is worth the price of the trip alone. But the best part is the fishing while being in the most scenic part of the world. What you need to know is what time of the year you should plan your Alaskan fishing trip and where to stay. Depending on if you are just going for a particular fish or want to try and catch a range different species.

If you are going for the coveted Sockeye Salmon then plan your trip between mid-May and mid-June and do a search on Google.com for “Alaska salmon fishing trips”, then narrow your search to Sockeye. That’s not the only fish you can catch on the Copper River, there are also King Salmon, which are huge, Coho Salmon, and also various species of trout.

The most ardent fisherman will be looking to book the Alaska fly fishing trip to catch their legal limit of salmon, then have it processed and then shipped overnight back home. If you are new to fly-fishing or have never tried it, then you may want to postpone a trip like this and learn locally before taking on such a task. Fly-fishing is an art and it takes practice and lots of it. Try taking fishing trip with a guide near your home and consult with them on gear and technique.

Fishing trips in Alaska are usually organized by various fishing lodges which is great because you can get a set price for your whole stay, and go out on organized fishing trips with seasoned fishing professional that know where the fish are biting. Unusually, these fishing lodges are rustic, but comfortable. Be sure and mention to lodge manager if you want to bring your family with you or it’s just a bunch of your guy friends wanting to do some serious fishing. Some lodges are more accommodating than others for children.

You can also plan your trip for saltwater fishing so you can go out on fishing charter boat and catch Halibut, Cod, and Rockfish to just name a few. Plus, you can still catch salmon when you saltwater fishing. As you can conclude, anyway you decide you cannot go wrong with any of the available Alaska fishing trips to book for your vacation. Just a final note: Don’t forget the camera! There is no way on earth you can describe what you will seeing while you are in the greatest fishing spot on Earth.

When you are choosing an Alaskan fishing vacation also consider the many variables that can make your trip a success or miserable failure. Are you traveling alone, or in a group? Will you be bringing your family with you? What is your definition of acceptable lodging? Will you be river fishing, fly or cast fishing, and what will you need to supply that the fishing tour companies do not?

Fishing vacations in Alaska only have a brief window of time each year. The fishing season for fishing vacationers is generally between May and August and some of September. This is when the tour operators shut down for the season and head back to the lower 48 states to spend the winter. Do not worry about the temperatures in the summer time it can get up to the mid 80’s so you won’t be bundling up much, if any. Plus the sun is up for a major portion of the 24-hour cycle.

The most popular packages are for Alaska salmon fishing vacations and book up rather quickly. It might be in your best interest to make reservations the prior year or at least several months in advance to insure a spot for yourself with the fishing guides. Don’t worry about having to know how to fly fish. Believe it or not they just use plain old heavy-duty rod and reels to catch Sockeye or the many other varieties of fish swimming up stream during their spawning run.

For the seasoned angler, the Alaska fly-fishing vacation packages are right on target. These people are serious about catching fish and it shows with the expensive gear they are packing and the hard learned techniques in their casting and luring the fish on to their hook. If you have never tried fly-fishing then maybe you could pay one of the pros to give you some beginner classes while there and start working on your technique for the following year.

As always, make sure you know exactly what type of lodging you are booking. Make sure it accommodates everyone in your group. The lodges are a little more like roughing it in some ways and your wife would probably not be a “happy camper” if she didn’t have all of the modern amenities that she is use to at home.

The great Alaska fishing vacation can be custom tailored to just about anyone’s needs, but keep in mind that you will primarily be out doors for most of your trip. When speaking to the lodging reservation agent ask them about clothing, foot ware, etc. If you have to buy a log of gear when you get there you will have two problems. One you will have to buy additional luggage to get your purchases home, and pay for extra baggage at the airport when checking in and two, the prices up in Alaska are drastically higher than in your home state.
