Zander Bait and Sizes
Do Zander take sea baits? There may be Pike anglers out there that have caught Zander on a Smelt, but I have fished several hours for fenland Pike with sea baits and have never even had a run from a Zed. The most readily available baits are without doubt the resident Roach,Rudd,Skimmers and Bleak, which can be used alive or dead. I tend to use these baits a similar size to when im Piking, if anything slightly smaller due to the Zander having a marginally smaller mouth. Optimum size being anywhere between 4 and 8 inches, but remember bigger baits doesn't mean bigger Zander!
Now for my favourite bait...the humble Eel section! They're slimy, they're slippery but they're tough and can be whacked out to (not onto!) the far bank all day and night without being cast off! I fish these in 4- 6 inch sections and have caught several Zander on them, any Eel up to about a pound can be used in this manner with them being plentiful in the summer months.
All these baits I set up on wire traces with two trebles either 10's or 8's depending on bait size, extra strength hooks are prefered to pull home into the Zander's boney mouth.
